Nan: Charming Town in the North of Thailand

Nan, History

Nan is one of Northern Thailand’s most peaceful provinces. The town is cradled in a lush valley far away from Chiang Mai around 320kms at the east (4 Hours’ drive), near the north-eastern bordered by Laos. The sleepy town was the center of an independent little kingdom and has a long history related to neighboring kingdoms such as Laos, Sukhothai, Lanna. The evidences are shown by some ancient sites in Nan nowadays.

Nature

This province features 6 national parks, including the stunning Doi Phukha National Park, which contains mountains nearly 2,000 m high. Phrathat Chae Haeng

There are several well-known temples worth visiting, but the one that you must visit is “Phrathat Chae Haeng” is a 600-year-old community situated three kilometers from the city and was built in the Sukhothai period, decorated in Lanna and Thai Lu style.

Nan National Museum (พิพิธภัณฑสถานแห่งชาติน่าน)

Worth a quick stop is the Nan National Museum. The building is a combination between European style in the age of King Rama V and the native arts of Nan. It was originally used as the royal pavilion, but now this place has turned into the museum. The museum is divided into two floors. The first floor shows the living of tribes in Nan including important festivals. The second floor is a display of antiques that was found in Nan dated from the pre-historic age.

Wat Phumin (วัดภูมินทร์)

Near the museum, Wat Phumin is located in Phumin Village and has beautifully-carved wood doors facing four directions. Inside, there is the most famous mural painting in the province. It is one of a-must-to-see, the painting of a couple, showing the best handiwork of age-old painting. Other paintings display the way of life and culture of the past.

Wat Suan Tan วัดเสือเต้น)

Wat Suan Tan is also known as “The temple of the sugar palm grove” is a 14th Century temple in Nan with a large Sukhothai style Chedi which features a 4.11-metre high bronze Buddha.

Wat Phrathatkhaonoi (วัดพระธาตุเขาน้อย)

The temple is located in the Nan city center on the mountain that you can see views of Nan city. The walking Buddha statue facing to the town is the highlight of this temple. They’re also the Lanna pagoda which to  the top cover with the real goal. This is the best place to see Sunrise and Sunset.

Noble house , Hong Chao Fong Came (โฮงเจ้าฟองคำ)

This teak wood house age over 200 years, which belong to Chao fong come , Nan royal family bloodline. This house has 4 building connect with wooden platform which has area of kitchen, bedroom, and lobby. The ground floor is an open space which dedicates for traditional cotton weave.

Rangsikasem building (ตึกรังสีเกษม)

Rangsikasem building is a colonial building inside Rasikasem School. It was built by missionary as part of catholic school. The founder is including  led by Dr. Samuel C Peoples, MD, Prof. Dr. Huge Taylor, Prof. Marion B Palmer and Miss Lucy Starling. It was completed in 1916. Now, it is functional for event ground such as wedding, meeting, and special event of the city.

Hor sil Rim nan (หอสิลป์ริมน่าน)

This is a private museum by Nan artist, Mr. Winai Prabripoo. He gathers his work and other artist such as painting, sculpture and statue in big and nice landscape surround by nature.

Wat Phuket in Pua district (วัดภูเก็ต)

Ket is a name of a village and Phu is hilly. Therefore, the temple is on the hill and you can view the city beautifully. It has nothing to do with the Phuket province in the south of Thailand.

Wat Phathat Pensakat ( Pua district)

There is a small temple with a pagoda architecture style. This temple is a spiritual center.

Wat Baan Ton Leang (วัดบ้านต้นเหลง)

In 2009 , the main chapel of this temple is listed in preserving places of Thai art and architecture association. The building is a little dark, but visitors can see the Buddha statue face clearly. The layout of the building is in Lanna architecture with three tier roof level similar to Thai lua or Sipsongpanna (Southern Chinese).

Kat Laeng

If you have time, don’t miss “Kat laeng” an evening market on the banks of Nan River. Highlights include traditional Thai handicrafts, souvenirs, and various types of other products at bargain prices.

ToobnaThai Lua (ตูปนาไทลื้อ) in Pua district

Small little market with a lot of rice field is in Pua district and in front of wat Pukhet. Walking on bamboo bridge, feeding fish, take a picture and sip a coffee and observe local market.

Interesting sightseeing

Tobacco Curing house (สถานีโรงบ่มใบยาสูบ บ้านสบกอน)

Tobacco curing house build in 1950. Tobacco us one of the main income for people of northern Thailand over  70 years. This special building is for preserving tobacco leaves. Now , it was no longer use for the industry, but become highlight that tourist come to take pictures.

Doi Samear dao in Srinan National park (ดอยเสมอดาว อุทยานศรีน่าน )

Those who love the mist and mountain, Doi Samear Dao is a nice place to see nice view of nature.

Boor Krau (อ.บ่อเกลือ)

A small district is well known for making salt. Many houses have their own small factory product salt. It has been a source of salt mine since ancient time. The village is in the middle of a mountain and have small stream pass through. During the cool season, it was nice to stroll to visit the village and meet the villagers and observe the way they work.

This is another national wonder in Pua province. It is a small stream in the mountain which has a very interesting look . Some Thai people said this is the Grand Canyon Thailand.

When is good time to visit?

In Nan, the wet season start from June to October and is overcast so it’s kind of hard to do sightseeing or trekking. perhaps, it’s gonna rain and you’ll get all wet.

But it is the perfect time for jungle trekking and white water rafting.

Summer season will start from March to May with clear blue sky and an average temperature is around 35 °C.

The cool season in Nan last for 3 months, from November to January and the average temperature is below 30 °C. Many people visit the province in October and November for the Traditional Boat Race. The city comes alive with the celebrations. See the elaborately decorated boats which are made from large logs.
